Abdul Sattar Edhi was a selfless individual who has devoted his entire life to help the sick, needy and the poor. The Edhi Foundation has helped countless people and has served in philanthropic missions all over the world. Abdul Sattar Edhi is highly respected and loved by the people of Pakistan. In fact, his respect and reverence is almost as much as that commanded by Quaid-e-azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.
There are three qualities of Abdul Sattar Edhi which defined him and are the fundamental pillars of the respect he commands worldwide.
Selflessness
The founder of the Edhi Foundation was a very selfless man. He spent his entire life looking after the needy and the poor without regard for himself. Right from the start when he had a battered van which served as an ambulance in which he hurtled from place to place helping others to creating one of the largest organizations of Pakistan, Edhi has done everything in his power to help others and be a source of comfort for others.
Simplicity
Despite being the head of the Edhi Foundation, Abdul Sattar Edhi had led a very simple and humble life. He owned two pairs of clothes, had never taken a salary from his organization and lived in a small two bedroom apartment over his clinic in Karachi.
Honesty
Honesty was the greatest quality of Edhi. Even after incalculable sums of money had passed through his hands he never had the slightest notion of greed. He was a simple man and prefered his simple lifestyle in contrast to the luxurious lifestyle of others. Due to this the Edhi Foundation has become such a big success.
There's perhaps no other person in Pakistan who enjoyed the undivided love and respect that the great humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi did. His death, on July 8th last year, plunged the country into deep mourning. One year on, the sense of loss still lingers.
