Pakistan's Independence Day, which is annually held on August 14, celebrates the country's independence from the British rule on that date in 1947. This year marks the 72nd anniversary of Pakistan's independence from British rule. This day is an occasion to promote patriotism and national unity, said Anas Sarwar Member Scottish Parliament (MSP).

He further said, while we are celebrating this year's 'Independence Day', we must also think of our Kashmiri brothers and sisters who are suffering and have lodged the motion in the Scottish Parliament.

Motion S5M-18484: Anas Sarwar MSP, Glasgow

Solidarity with Jammu and Kashmir

That the Parliament expresses concern at the Indian Government's reported decision to revoke Article 370 of its constitution, which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir; believes that this further undermines their autonomy and does nothing to further the principles of peace and justice; recognises the concerns of Kashmiri, Pakistani and Indian people living in Scotland who it considers want to see a de-escalation and all communities living side by side in peace, and calls on the Scottish Government, UK Government and international community to urge the Indian Government to reverse without delay what it considers this reckless decision, to demand an immediate end to the reported human rights abuses and to facilitate a meaningful dialogue between all parties so that the people of Jammu and Kashmir can have the right to self-determination that it understands they were promised.
