Dr. M. Shafi Kausar is a well known and popular figure in Glasgow's Islamic community. He manages to combine his work as a doctor with an energetic espousal of Muslim culture which ensures that he is both a committed part of the indigenous community whilst continuing and strengthening the beliefs and principles of Islam. Dr Kausar showed considerable academic talent from an early age. He has studied widely and is extremely well qualified having gained an MBBS, MD, MRCGP, DVD and DPD.
Dr Kausar arrived in Scotland in 1972 and has since 1977, had a doctor's surgery in Glasgow. His work as a principal general practitioner ensures that he retains daily links with the community which enables him to be constantly aware of any problems that may arise. His interests are in assisting people in many aspects of their life, not just the physical.
For Dr Kausar his social and community activities are inseperable, for the last 30 years he has been deeply involved in community activities, particularly those involving the muslims. This has led him to be closely involved with the work of the Jamiat Ithad-Ul-Muslimeen of the Central Mosque in Glasgow.
In 1982 he founded the United Muslim Organisation of Scotland whose aims are to preserve and present the rights and needs of the Muslim community regarding housing, education and employment. UMO functions as a pressure group to ensure that Muslims receive adequate service from the community in which they live.
Dr Kausar believes that Pakistanis in this country should involve themselves in local life while preserving their cultural and social heritage. His work for the community embodies and exemplifies that belief. He has six children who he encourages in his beliefs.
