A proud son of Pakistan, Dr Reza Baqir is an economist, who resigned from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to serve Pakistan. He is now the 20th and current Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan. Dr. Reza Baqir assumed the charge of Governor State Bank of Pakistan after President of Pakistan appointed him as Governor State Bank of Pakistan for a period of three years in pursuance of Section 10 (3) of the State Bank of Pakistan Act 1956.

An Aitchison alumnus, Dr Reza Baqir earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in Economics. He has sixteen years of experience with the IMF and two years with the World Bank. He was the Head of the IMF's Office in Egypt and Senior Resident Representative since August 2017. Dr Baqir also represented the IMF at the meetings of the Paris Club for several years.

He has been the chief of the IMF's Debt Policy Division and worked on IMF policies on external debt sustainability and restructuring of member countries. He has also helped design debt and fiscal policies for crisis-hit countries like Greece and Ukraine, among others. Before the IMF, Dr Baqir worked at the World Bank, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Union Bank of Switzerland.

Dr Reza Baqir has served as the IMF’s Mission Chief for Bulgaria and Romania since January 2016. Prior to this appointment in the IMF’s European Department, Dr Baqir served as Chief of the IMF’s Debt Policy Division for four years in the IMF’s Strategy, Policy, and Review Department, Deputy Division Chief of the IMF's Emerging Markets Division, IMF Resident Representative to the Philippines, and numerous other positions.

Dr. Reza Baqir's research has been published in top journals of the economics profession, including the Journal of Political Economy and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. Educated from high-ranking academic institutions he holds a Ph.D in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and an A.B. (Magna cum Laude) in Economics from Harvard University.

Dr Reza Baqir, being a son of the soil, has readied himself to work shoulder-to-shoulder with Prime Minister Imran Khan to put Pakistan's economy on sound footing.
