Currently serving as Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB)) of Pakistan, Chaudhry Qamar Zaman, was aide-de-camp (ADC) to Late President General Zia-ul Haq. In 1982, after serving army for ten years he retired as major, did his CSS and joined Civil Service of Pakistan in District Management Group on army’s quota.
His appointment as Chairman NAB came after a consensus between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah.
Qamar Zaman, who held the position in Interior Ministry as a federal secretary in grade 22, has served on various key positions during his bureaucratic career and is considered to be one of the credible bureaucrats.
During Nawaz Sharif’s 1997 government, he worked as chairman Capital Development Authority, chief commissioner Islamabad and Capital Administration Division secretary. He also served as chief commissioner for Lahore and Rawalpindi and as chief secretary Gilgit-Baltistan.
During President General Musharraf’s regime, Qamar Zaman worked as joint secretary Ministry of Defence. Subsequently, during PPP’s government he worked as Interior secretary for three years but was suspended by former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for not allowing the then defence minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar leave for official visit to China.
An inquiry later revealed that Ahmed Mukhtar, who had been on the exit control list, was barred from visit by FIA Immigration. Afterwards Zaman was appointed Education and Training Department secretary. Zaman has also served as Aviation joint secretary, Sindh Local Government and Housing secretary, HEC executive director and Education secretary.
Qamar zaman has vowed to make NAB an effective accountability body that would work independently without any political pressure. He is determined to root out corruption and to bring to a logical end all high profile cases, including the cases of top politicians, which are pending with the bureau for the last many years, without any discrimination and political pressure.
