Adeeb Ul Hasan Rizvi

The founder and head of Sindh Institute of urology and Transplantation (SIUT) Professor Adeeb Ul Hasan Rizvi graduated from Dow Medical College (DMC), Karachi in 1960. The SIUT Is one of the most reputed medical institutions in the South Asian Region, providing services relating to the domains of urology and kidney transplantation free of cost. It aims at working for the marginalized sections of society who cannot afford to receive medical treatments even in dire circumstance.

He is the president of the Transplant Society of Pakistan. In 2003, Dr. Rizvi led a team of SIUT surgeons that performed the first successful liver transplant on an infant in Pakistan. He is considered a prominent person, who is doing a phenomenal job in the field of Urology (Medical) in Pakistan. He prefers to be humanitarian because he considers that religion is all about humanitarianism.

He has worked day and night for decades and has developed his institute as a leading Urology and Transplantation facility in Pakistan. He disliked those doctors who say, I cannot do justice to your problem here, you better come in as a private patient. Being a philanthropist he did not do so and went to and from work by public bus for five years because he had have no car and lived hand-to-mouth.

He formed his team and broke four conventions. First, he did not sit alone or detach from juniors. Second, he saw every case. Third, he did not bound the number of cases. Fourth, the senior doctors should not associate with junior doctors. These had two paybacks, first enabled him to know his team and befall close to them. Second, it permitted him to know his patients well.

In 1985, the first transplant patient was a teacher. After his transplantation, Professor Rizvi feared that if the transplant failed it would affect both, on the team’s fame and the institute but his transplantation succeeded, there after he and his team began the practice regularly. In 2003, Dr. Rizvi led a panel of SIUT surgeons that performed the foremost triumphant liver uproot on an infant in Pakistan.

SIUT started as an eight-bed ward in the Civil Hospital, Karachi. In the years following its inception, it has progressed from a small ward to a status of an institute by an Act of the Provincial Assembly and is one of the leading nephro-urlogical and transplant centres in the world. It was then established as a charitable trust in 2005 to benefit the public and to be a source for health facilities, medical education and financial assistance to the needy patients.

At present, SIUT is located within the Civil Hospital, Karachi. SIUT’s new premises, the Dewan Farooq Medical Complex, are situated one block away. This 300-bed Complex has been built on a plot of 1.5 acres granted by the Sindh Government. It is one of the largest centres for renal diseases and transplantation in the region, covering an area of 315, 000 sq. feet. The construction of the Complex was made possible by a generous donation from the Dewan Mushtaq family, a local philanthropic business family.

Professor Rizvi, a pioneer in treating kidney related diseases in Pakistan received the Lifetime achievement Award in 2015 for his incomparable service to humanity.
