Amin Gulgee

Coming from a celebrated dynasty can often put a great deal of pressure on people to achieve. Success in that field is therefore doubly sweet when that destiny is fulfilled in a subsequent generation. One such person is Amin Gulgee, who is a famous metal sculptor. He was born to late Pakistani artist Ismail Gulgee in 1966. Amin Gulgee is not just a sculptor but a jeweller maker, director, performer and curator, who has many feathers in his cap.

The artist uses the medium of metal to explore life, religion and the environment that he is surrounded by. Amin Gulgee’s work will leave you bewildered as it makes use of many expressions. Egg Series is one of his more current bodies of work. The inspiration behind this work was his sister’s pregnancy. The artist watched this whole process with wonder and awe. He thought about the male body and its inadequacy to produce children. Thus, he translated the whole thought process in his work. The shape of the egg denotes female power and its bulging shape is a sign of expanded female body.

Amin Gulgee made extensive use of Arabic calligraphy in his compositions. He held the belief that all life is a creation of God. Along with that he is given credit for being the first person to bring Islamic calligraphy into the three dimensions of sculpture. His work can be defined as simplistic and pure. Amin repeats a certain line from the sacred text and this shows his direct relationship with the divine.
