Ghulam Farooq Awan was born on 10 February 1961 in a village called Hothla in Kahuta. He got his primary education in Hothla Primary school and graduated in Law (LLB) from Punjab University. He went on to gain his master (MA) in Islamic studies. He also participated in student's union politics and won the role as a representative of students.
He is a Practicing lawyer and former adviser to the Prime Minister of Pakistan for law, justice and parliamentary affairs. He is also the former additional Attorney General of Pakistan. He became a lawyer in 1991 and has spent 20 years as a lawyer. He became the additional Attorney General of Pakistan on 4 January 2011 and appointed as the adviser to the PM on 16 April 2011 by President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari. He was made the adviser to the Prime Minister in 2011.
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani approved the appointment of Ghulam Farooq Awan as Advisor to the Ministry of Postal Services. Earlier, Ghulam Farooq Awan has served as Advisor to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
Awan belongs to a political family. He is the brother of Babar Awan. His nephews are lawyers and one of his nephews is Shakeel Awan.
