Chairperson of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), Rahat Kaunain Hassan received her LLM degree from King's College, London. She has been associated with, and has been a partner at, some of the finest civil and commercial law firms in Pakistan. Under her leadership, CCP has gained international repute for achieving substantive progress in competition law enforcement in a short span of time. Earlier, Rahat Kaunain served CCP as Member (Legal and Office of Fair Trading) since its establishment in November 2007.
In 2001, Rahat Kaunain Hassan was appointed General Counsel/Executive Director at the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). Soon after the conclusion of her tenure at SECP, Rahat Kaunain established her own law firm, handling civil and commercial litigation and regulatory work. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Office of Fair Trading within CCP and has authored numerous position papers, guidelines, policy notes on important issues of competition law and policy. Moreover, she has authored, co-authored most of the seminal Orders passed by CCP, including those that resulted in breaking the most pernicious of cartels.
Under her Chairpersonship, CCP has been twice nominated/short listed amongst top 5 agencies for GCR Enforcement 'Agency of the year Award' out of 42 agencies in the region of Asia Pacific Middle East and Africa, by the Global Competition Review, a UK based organization.
Since 2010, CCP has been volunteering for GCR third party independent evaluation, wherein, CCP's performance has been termed as impressively consistent and presently upon her request, CCP is undergoing Peer Review by UNCTAD to assess and evaluate the impact of CCP's performance with recommendation of possible improvements.
A working mother of four, Rahat Kaunain Hassan has been a high achiever in her field, and in recognition of her commitment to the public service, she received the prestigious Women of Achievement Award, 2010 and Wonder Women Award, 2013. She has also been nominated for the Sitara-e-Imtiaz.
