Shah M. Jamal did his masters in International Relations from Fletcher School of Law & diplomacy, Tufts University, USA. He joined Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1985. After attending various training programmes at the Civil Services academy in Lahore, he had his first assignment at the Ministry of foreign affairs as Assistant Director (Middle East) from March 1987 to October 1987 and then Assistant Director (Training & Career Planning) November 1987 to October 1988.

Shah Jamal has held various diplomatic assignments in Pakistan missions abroad. He was in Rome from October 1989 to March 1993, New Delhi April 1997 to June 2001, and Tripoli July 2001 to December 2002.
 
He also served at the Ministry of Foreign affairs as Deputy Director (Europe) from 1993 to August 1994, Director (OIC) Organisation of Islamic Countries, November 1995 to March 1997, Director International Conferences & Commonwealth, Director (Organisation, Career Planning) and Director (Personnel), January 2003 to September 2005.
 
Shah Jamal is currently serving as Minister in the Consulate of Pakistan in Glasgow since October 2005.
